Phil - Lead Guitar
Phil started to play guitar at 13 and formed a band called Crisis with his school mates and put on a show in his local village hall. With a ‘make do stage’ of tables, the first gig went down a storm. The highlight being the bassist disappearing between tables mid-act.
At 19 he played with a Leicester based group ‘Storm Charmer’: a Rock/Metal outfit. The group experienced reasonable success appearing as wide a field as Birmingham.
At 21 Phil hung up his guitar and settled into other hobbies. But the twang of steel against wood didn’t really leave him. Just around mid-life crisis time he started to play again and in 2005 he tried out for the Roadhogs and that as they say is that.
If you hear Phil play you will quickly tell who his musical influences are, they include: Steve Morse of Deep Purple, Gary Moore, Scott Gorham, Brian Robertson of Thin Lizzy and Angus Young of AC/DC.
Dude - Vocals
Dude is the only surviving founder member of the band (see history) and has been providing vocals since 2002. Prior to forming the band he had no previous experience of performing or singing, but we all have to start somewhere he says.
During the day (well mainly night) Dude drives a Lorry and wiles away the hours practicing his set lists. So the next time you see a head banging Trucker, smile and wave, it could be Dude and if it isn’t Dude you will have made some other head banging Trucker happy!
Dude’s musical influences are obvious: The Stones, and occasionally when he is performing you can see that he is playing Mick (see the gallery)
H - Vocals
H has always loved to sing and she is constantly singing. Prior to joining the Roadhogs, H’s only experience of singing in public was regular Karaoke nights. It was at one of these nights that someone told her that the Roadhogs were looking for a backing singer and encouraged her to audition. That was in 2003 and she joined the band immediately. She now shares the singing with Dude and the mix of female and male vocals gives the band a much wider set-list. Plus H’s personality combined with Dude make the band entertaining and not just a pleasure to hear but also to watch.
H is a fine vocalist and has been inspired by an incredibly wide range of artists including: Dusty Springfield, Cher, Patsy Clien, Dolly Parton, Shania Twain and Blondie.
H didn’t include Tina Turner in her list of inspiration, but if you ever get a chance to hear her sing River Deep you will wonder why not?
Dave is commonly referred to as ‘the Doctor’. Not because of his medical skills, because frankly he has none, but because of his musical prowess. Dave is not only a Doctor of the bass guitar, he can turn his hand competently to drums, guitar and piano. He truly is an all-rounder.
He originally decided to start playing the guitar to impress the girls and impress he does. Whether it’s the girls or not is for them to decide.
Since he was initially inspired by Marc Bolan on Top of the Pops, Dave has made music a large part of his life for the past 37 years. From the 1970’s to the present he has been in bands. These have included: Paris and the Atmospheres, Marquis De Sade, Charlotte’s Web and Whirl. He still plays with Paris and the Atmospheres as well as his regular gigging with the Roadhogs and his other band Evolve: specialising in Indie covers.
Dave has a wide range of musical influences, ranging from 1950’s Rock ‘n’ Roll, English Blues and Glam Rock.
Dave Heywood - Electric Bass Guitar
Lloyd - Drums
Lloyd is the newest member of the Roadhogs, joining in July 2011. But he is by no means any less experienced at his art than the other members. We are not sure how long he has been playing, as he keeps his age a closely guarded secret and spend hours moisturising.
He started playing drums at the age of 9 spurred on by his Dad: himself and accomplished Jazz Musician, playing with, amongst other big names, one of the best: Humphrey Littleton.
Llloyd’s Dad’s dream of having his own drummer didn’t materialise as his son was lured toward Rock music rather than Jazz.
Prior to joining the Roadhogs Lloyd has played with a number of bands, notably: Moneyshot a Leamington based band and Joe Kidd.
Jazz’s loss is very much our gain when Lloyd plays it can be quite magical. His favourite pastime whilst playing is trying to deafen Phil with his massive array of cymbals.
A Potted History
The band was formed in 2002. The idea of a few mates who all had connections with the road: Lorry Drivers and a Driving Instructor, hence the name Roadhogs.
Since it began the band has not moved from its roots, being a Classic Rock and Pop covers band but the line-up has changed with the addition of a female singer and a gradual change of all the musicians.
The band continues to go from strength to strength and increases in popularity.
